The recurring controversy surrounding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test has renewed questions about whether India’s largest medical entrance examination requires more than temporary security measures. For millions of students preparing for medical admissions, the integrity of NEET is not merely an administrative concern. Multiple sessions could reduce concentration of risk

Another possible approach is to conduct the examination across multiple sessions rather than relying on one nationwide paper at one time.

This model is already used in some other large competitive examinations. Different candidates can receive different but statistically equivalent question papers, with a standardised methodology used to compare scores.

AI-based tools could potentially assist in auditing large volumes of digital records and flagging behaviour that requires human investigation.

At examination centres, technology could also strengthen identity verification and prevent impersonation or unauthorised access.

However, technology should not be treated as a magic solution. AI systems themselves can be compromised, produce false alerts or create privacy concerns. Any technology-driven security system must therefore operate under clear rules, independent audits and human oversight.

The use of technology should strengthen accountability rather than replace it.

Independent oversight is essential

One of the most important reforms may involve strengthening institutional accountability.

A national examination affecting millions of students should have clear responsibility at every stage. When a security failure occurs, investigators and the public should be able to determine who was responsible for each part of the process.

This requires detailed documentation and audit trails.

Every stage—from question creation to final distribution—should generate records that can be independently examined. Access to confidential material should be logged. Any unusual activity should trigger an investigation.

Independent audits could also be conducted before and after major examinations. These audits should examine not only technical systems but also physical security, staffing, outsourcing arrangements and emergency procedures.

Accountability should extend to private contractors and service providers involved in examination operations. If an outside organisation handles sensitive examination work, strict contractual safeguards and penalties should apply.

The role of outsourcing needs closer examination

Large national examinations often depend on a network of external agencies and service providers. While outsourcing can improve operational efficiency, it can also create additional security challenges if responsibilities are spread across multiple organisations.
